Wichita city officials community members and ice skaters came together Monday night to remember the lives of skaters and coaches killed in last week’s crash near Washington, D.C.’s Ronal Reagan National Airport involving American Airlines flight 5342,

The city had tried for years to host the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, and to get a direct flight to the northeast.

Ice rinks across the country held moments of silence to pay tribute to the lives lost on Flight 5342. At the Wichita Ice Center, city leaders joined members of the city's skating community and others for a tribute on center ice.

Several coaches and skaters with the United States figure skating team were on the flight from Wichita to Washington, D.C., that crashed Wednesday night, according to U.S. Figure Skating. The flight is not believed to have any survivors.

Several of the victims were part of the U.S. Figure Skating team. Their deaths hit close to home for members of the ice-skating community nationwide. A little outside Charlotte, in Indian Trail, a moment of silence was held for the ice-skating victims.
