An all-day winter storm is starting to taper off in Iowa. But, not before snowfall today reached nearly a foot in some areas.

Wet weather follows winter storm in Maryland

Rain will become heavy overnight into Sunday morning, accompanied by gusty southerly winds. This will warm temperatures into the lower 50s by Sunday afternoon. An Alert Day may be needed for Sunday due to heavy rainfall, which, combined with melting snow, could lead to minor flooding concerns.

Around 2:30 p.m., some snow was showing up on weather radar in the Garden State, but a dry layer of air in the lower atmosphere was causing the snow to evaporate before reaching the ground. That’s a phenomenon known as virga.

Winter storm warnings were in place across much of the Great Lakes region on Wednesday, with hazardous travel conditions likely.

A procession of winter storms is forecast to bring snow, sleet, ice and potentially flood-inducing rain to sprawling bands of the U.S. this week.

The highest snowfall totals were reported in Atlantic and Cape May counties so far. More snow is on the way for New Jersey on Wednesday night.

Winter storm warnings are issued "when a significant combination of hazardous winter weather is occurring or imminent."
