A bipartisan group of lawmakers in the House passed the HALT Act on Thursday, a bill that seeks to permanently classify fentanyl as a Schedule 1 substance.
House passes ‘HALT Fentanyl Act’
Congress is taking steps they say will help prevent fentanyl overdoses and increase penalties for drug traffickers. Congress approved what’s known as Halt All Lethal Trafficking or the “HALT” Fentanyl Act.
House approves permanent Schedule 1 classification of fentanyl
The “Halt All Lethal Trafficking of Fentanyl Act” would amend the Controlled Substances Act to include fentanyl as a Schedule 1 drug, meaning it has no "accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse," according to the Drug Enforcement Administration. Other Schedule 1 drugs include heroin, LSD, and marijuana.
