Kaimu Beach is a black sand beach located on the island of Hawaii. It was formed by lava flows from the Kilauea volcano, which erupted in 1990 and covered the previous white sand beach.
Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach is one of Hawaii's best beaches, and it's not only renowned for its powder-soft black shoreline lined by swaying coconut palms, but also its beloved inhabitants.
Sand mining first ramped up in the 1980s and vaulted Maui as the primary source of sand used in Honolulu concrete. By 2006, 70 percent of the island’s sand stock had been shipped to Oahu.
The marchers attended a council Infrastructure and Environmental Management Committee meeting to call for an extension of the moratorium on sand mining in Central Maui, which expires this month.
