The New York Police Department’s Harbor Unit pulled the remains out of the river near Governor's Island around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The gruesome discovery was made when the NYPD Harbor Unit retrieved the suitcase, which contained a man's torso, in the East River south of Manhattan.

The NYPD is investigating after a suitcase containing human remains was found in the East River near Governor’s Island on Wednesday. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is still working to determine the cause of death.
