The municipality separated from Hundwil in 1749 and was named after the Uf Stein section of the neighbouring river. Stein has an area, as of 2006, of 9.4 km². Of this area, 68.3% is used for agricultural purposes, while 22% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 8.3% is settled and the remainder is non-productive.
